Originating in the Dominican Republic, bachata is a playful and romantic style of music and dance which has exploded in popularity across the world

From its humble roots as a forbidden folk dance for the "common people" to dazzling performances by international superstars, bachata offers something for everyone!

In each class, we welcome you into a safe and friendly environment for you to practice and build your understanding from the ground up. As you progress through the term, you will learn to master the bachata movements, rhythms and connection with your body that make you a better dancer.

Starting from scratch?

Bachata is an easy dance to start with, with slower music than Salsa and a simple basic step.

Even if you have two left feet, we will build a rock solid foundation and have you partner dancing within the first lesson!

We always do our best to accommodate mid-term drop-ins, but please be aware that depending on your level of experience you may be more comfortable joining in earlier in the term!

When are the classes?

Our classes run Thursday nights, with Level 1 Beginners classes starting at 7:00pm and Level 2 Improvers classes at 8:00pm. Be sure to check the class page to see where in the term we are!

If it's your first time, please arrive a little early to allow time to sign in! Doors open 6:45pm

You can also save time (and money!) by signing up online before arriving!

Do I need a partner?

No partners necessary! Our classes rotate frequently, with teachers standing by to help out at any time

What do I need to bring?

A comfy pair of shoes (not too grippy), a smile, and your confirmation email if you have pre-booked online!

What styles do you teach?

As Perth's first Traditional-focused bachata school, we have designed our syllabus to teach you real bachata, while still giving you the tools you need to flourish in a fusion-heavy dance world

Our syllabus utilises the Island Touch style developed by Ataca y La Alemana, featuring stronger Traditional Bachata influences compared to other fusion styles, while still having Moderna flair

Our Level 2 classes also incorporate the Sensual style of Daniel y Desiree, to make you a more versatile dancer on the social dance floor!

Should I wait until the start of next term?

If you have absolutely zero experience, it would greatly benefit you to try to catch us on Week 1 of term, where we go through the basic steps in detail

We understand that may not always be possible, so please let us know when you drop in and we'll do our best to get you up to speed quickly!

If you have danced before, you will find it easier dropping in throughout the term, contact us if you're interested!

Popular Styles of Bachata

Traditional Bachata

Also referred to as Authentic Bachata or Dominican Bachata, this is the style of bachata you'd see danced in the Dominican Republic itself.

Emphasising quick syncopated footwork and strong connection to the melodies within the music, Traditional Bachata can at first seem daunting but allows great freedom of expression for the individual dancer.

As Perth's first traditional bachata focused school, our goal is to help you to connect authentically with the real roots of bachata

Modern Bachata

The most common styles of bachata you may see out on the dance floor! Fusion, Urban or Club Style bachata (among other names) is the modernised version of bachata incorporating elements from other dance styles as it left the Dominican Republic in the 90s

These styles mixing in Latin and Western influences helped fuel bachata's explosive rise in popularity as it was danced in nightclubs around the world

The Island Touch bachata that we teach on Thursdays is a fusion style, featuring Traditional, Modern and Sensual influences to give you the best foundation for your dance journey!

(Often referred to as "Moderna" to signify modern influences, Bachata Moderna is actually a specific style pioneered by Juan Ruiz, key organiser of the world's first Bachata Festival - in Sydney, Australia!)

Bachata Sensual

Developed in Spain by Korke and Judith over 15 years ago, Bachata Sensual is the youngest of the major styles, but rapidly becoming the most popular

Longer movements, sensual body isolations and theatrical musicality emphasise bachata's passionate roots, while providing great material for social media!

Our level 2 classes mix in Bachata Sensual techniques and patterns to build your dance vocabulary further, preparing you for whatever may get thrown at you on the social dance floor!
